While I don't own a Mac, and never have, I do agree with you. Out of all the current "big" computer manufacturers I would definitely recommend a Mac (mainly because of OS X) to anyone buying a new computer.

The section in the RW article "It's the libraries, stupid!" seems to be the exact same path that UNIX in general has been following for decades. I also think it's part of the reason Perl is still alive - tons of libraries.

I don't feel the race between MS and Apple will be as interesting as seeing how Open Source Software and Apple co-exist in the future. The reason I say between MS and Apple is because MS dominates desktop software, and for someone else to dominate they have to beat out MS.

I realize Apple is a hardware company first and foremost (or was), but if everything moves the way you said - cloud computing - I don't think the hardware will matter as much.

I think there have been a lot of computer-related predictions in the past century. Also, while I tend to agree with you on the idea computers being replaced by the thin client cloud, the idea of distributed computing is quite old. After all, that was the point of a mainframe. Will it take off this time around? It's really a culture challenge much more than a technological one. Much in the way no one wanted to put their money in a "bank" at first.

"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers."
-1943

"Computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons."
-1949

"640K ought to be enough for anybody."
-1981

"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home."
